April 2013
The Gold Country 4H Meat Goat group is wrapping up its 4H year with a final meeting on showmanship and fitting and then preparing for the Placer County Fair in June.
We have weaned off the kids and transferred moms down to the creek area to dry off, rest and replenish. We did have a late kidding on Good Friday of twin boys so they are the last of this year's babies. One may be big enough to go to Gold Country Fair in September...I hope!

Our animals were honored to be a part of the December, 2010-2011 "Road to Bethlehem" nativity display at Combie Church. Jerusalem our donkey, our cow, Annabelle, and two sheep and two goats have been stationed at the various drive-by scenes depicting the story of the arrival of Jesus, our Saviour.

In 2010, Sweet Home Ranch received about three inches of snow in early December. Due to unusually low temperatures, the snow hung around for three days. We enjoyed it immensely in spite of going without electricity for 24 hours
(our T-top woodstove was sure a blessing).

Our newest addition to Sweet Home Ranch
is "Annabelle" a "black baldy" heifer calf.
She was born Super BowlSunday(Feb. 6th)
2010 and was bottle-fed.

Savvy, our APHA, 5 year old mare under saddle at the walk/trot/canter.

Georgia, a.k.a "Fairest in the Land", our 5 year old, APHA mare working out in the arena.

Our guard Llama, Bruister, spies a possible threat to Maisey and her two kids. Whether a threat is real or just imagined, a llama is ever watchful over his charges in the pasture.

"Jerusalem", our miniature donkey, is not used as a guard animal because he plays much too rough with the goats and sheep. Instead, he hangs out with Georgia and Savvy, our young paint mares who are part of the Gold Country 4H horse project.

"Springer" our Cotswald/Shetland lamb

"Goose" our shetland sheep so-named for the fiesty bird who is said to have "cropped" her ear when she was just a lamb. Goose has an amazingly beautiful, soft fleece.

"Pilgrim" is in charge of protecting our goat mamas and babies-he sure loves the kid goats.

"Indy" our Corgi as a youngster
